Hurricane retrofitting can change your home insurance rate for the better. Insurance discounts go into effect after you get a home inspection that verify the upgrades. Specifically, a wind mitigation inspection will create a record and proof of your new hurricane straps and nails. The wind mitigation inspection is required by all home owners insurance companies every five years in order to maintain any insurance discounts resulting from mitigation features of your house.

About the Wind Mitigation Inspection
How does a wind mitigation inspection document your improved roof-to-wall connections? This inspection uses the Uniform Mitigation Verification form (Form 1802), which includes 7 main components of the coverage A property – the main dwelling of your property.
- Building Code: Was the structure built in compliance to newer or older building codes?
- Roof covering: What type of covering and how old?
- Roof Deck Attachment: What type of roof sheathing and nails? Nail Spacing?
- Roof to Wall Attachment: What type of hurricane ties and how many nails? (This is the only section relevant to our Retrofit Services).
- Roof Geometry: Hip, Flat or Other roof type?
- Secondary Water Resistance: Does a SWR exist?
- Opening Protection: What types of wind-borne debris protection exist at the door and window openings?
Item #4 in the wind mitigation inspection is the category that our hurricane strap retrofit will improve. This category, Roof-to-Wall Attachments, is the number one factor that can be modified to reduce windstorm damages. Not only that, it is profitable to make this upgrade. It costs a fraction of a window and door retrofit and provides the best discounts.
